Dance Magic: Can web-based technologies provide motivational support to learners of Irish Dance?

Orla Clarke

A lack of support structures exist for the learners of Irish dance. This paper identifies current trends in the literature surrounding the use of motivation techniques in computer assisted instruction, and seeks to use these techniques in the design of a web-based Irish dance support artefact. The research exercise is outlined and the findings of the exercise are discussed. The conclusions reached by this research are summarised by stating that web-based technologies can provide motivational support to learners of Irish dance, but issues such as technology, access and a connection to the face-to-face class, must be considered. The resulting artefact must have a technical design based on pedagogical theory and must also be visually and cognitively engaging.
