About Waterford

Exploring Waterford City and Surrounds in May

Waterford City, Ireland’s oldest city, offers a rich blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty, making it a fascinating place to explore during your visit for the EdTech 2025 conference in May. The city’s heart is the Viking Triangle, a compact historic quarter where you can step back in time. Here, you’ll find iconic landmarks like Reginald’s Tower, the Medieval Museum (housing treasures like the 15th-century cloth-of-gold vestments), and the elegant Bishop’s Palace, showcasing Georgian history. A visit to the House of Waterford Crystal is also a must-do, offering tours to see the intricate craftsmanship firsthand. May is a pleasant time to wander through these historical sites and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient city.

Beyond the city centre, County Waterford offers stunning natural landscapes. May is an excellent time to experience the Waterford Greenway, a spectacular off-road cycling and walking trail built along a former railway line. The mild weather makes it ideal for exploring sections of this 46km route, which takes you through charming countryside, past viaducts and tunnels, with coastal views towards Dungarvan. For those who enjoy gardens, Mount Congreve Gardens, known as one of the ‘Great Gardens of the World’, is particularly beautiful in May as many rhododendrons and other plants are in full bloom.

Whether you prefer delving into centuries of history in the Viking Triangle, enjoying the vibrant city atmosphere with its cafes and shops, or exploring the picturesque outdoors along the Greenway or in nearby gardens, Waterford and its surrounds offer a variety of activities to complement your conference experience in May.

Copper Coast and Waterford Greenway

The 25 mile journey from Tramore to Dungarvan is known as the copper coast. It is the only official European Geopark in Ireland and is celebrated for its diversity of rock formations and beautiful coastline. If feeling brave Newtown Cove and the Guillamene are good spots for a winter dip and Tramore beach or Kilmurrin for a surf. Contact the programme committee for more information.
